Most rose species only need light winter protection. Species of roses like Hybrid Perennials, miniature roses, Hybrid Musks and Bourbon roses can withstand the winter months quite well. Protecting these types of roses from any frost damage that may occur is very easy. All you need to do is pack a couple inches of compost or mulch around the base of the rose bush and its roots. Although some roses can sustain pretty well through the winter months, some types of roses will need extra care to get through the winter.
For fragile roses like the hybrid tea roses, You should purchase or make a rose collar to surround the rose bush. You will need to make sure that the rose collar surrounds a foot of the rose plant. The rose collar should then be filled with compost or soil so that it will stay in place. Placing a rose collar around your rose bushes will protect your roses from the cold winter winds and any frost that may occur during the cold winter months.
